While it’s
sad to see Christians and Hindus having usually a bitter relationship in Nepali
soil, Sean McDowell has done a great job! In a typical Nepali environment, as
everyone knows, there is almost disrespect and conflict between the two faith
systems.
After
being converted into Christian religion, peoples used to mock, attack or even criticize
Hindus. The languages such as abusing their deities as Satan is almost
emotional and notorious in our land. A healthy conversation lacks so much that
both sides have been growing by attacking and mocking each other. Even many Christians
detach themselves from their families and relatives because they are Hindu. It’s
no different than demanding own Christian nation, space, matter and time.
Furthermore
when Christians try sharing the Gospel, they get extreme hatred and mockery
even from the other side. Christians are accused of being sinner because they
eat beef and disrespect their gods as demons. Christians are accused of
converting peoples showing greed of dollar, wealth, job or whatever the best
ways they could. Therefore the situation isn't sound and healthy in Nepal.
Sean McDowell
had an interesting dialogue with a Hindu guru, learning briefly about Hinduism,
gods, rituals and traditions with full humility. The question answer time also accompanied
a friendly environment where they exchange and share their ideas despite
differences. This is radically different from environment of Nepal where two
faith systems have lot of logical and emotional discussion. Sean urges every Christians
to engage with other faiths and maintain a healthy network with peoples whereas
most conservative churches in Nepal used to dismiss such engagement. Visiting
any temple is far beyond the imagination.
Within a
short video, Sean has shown a great example how we can maintain a sound
approach with peoples of other faiths. It is obviously true that we often get
into debates while discussing about faiths but conflict itself isn't bad unless
we get into a wise approach. Sometimes such an engaging discussion helps us to
maintain a good relationship showing our godly character that can open a door
for the Gospel. We simply don't have to jump over severe criticism in doctrinal
topics but have a friendly discussion and weight wisely both sides.
This seems
a great need in Nepal as religious conflict are so common here. Christian
preacher and evangelists are often hated and repelled. Hindus are often
criticized as superstitious peoples. This leads to a great barrier for the
Gospel itself. Christians need to be familiar with other faiths and have a
friendly dialogue with them. In order to share the gospel, we first need to
understand their worldview. Then we shall approach to them wisely. And by such
conversation, both sides can then better understand each other and
misunderstanding can sway away.
Engage
with peoples, know their worldview, know what they believe and why, study their
scriptures if possible, observe and understand their rituals, and try finding
where and how you can offer them the Gospel!
