The disagreement remains as long as we try to fit in modern
science into Genesis 1 i.e. reading Genesis 1 with modern lens. The Genesis was
of course written for us but Not to us. The context of Genesis 1 was polemic
against ancient near east culture. There is no reason to presume that Genesis
was intended to teach science to the contemporary Hebrew people. They were in
need of theological query and not scientific.
The whole Pentateuch is about God and Hebrew people. How God
showed his Supremacy over ancient near east deities and reformed the minds of
Hebrews after the exile. Reading back our science such as Big Bang or evolution
back into ancient Genesis is straightforward dishonor to purpose of Genesis.
The theme that Genesis reveals about God and his relationship with world is
still true for us. That's more important than "the phenomena of
creation".
It can be possible God might have used Big Bang. There are
faithful theologians and apologists today who do not regard even evolution as
incompatible with Genesis. We need to get updated with science where it leads
us. So far, Big Bang has been well established phenomena and not merely
hypothesis. Evolution on the other hand is still ongoing research. Genesis and
these subjects are almost not on same phase of comparison. Let us be honest
with Genesis.
While there are reconciling approaches such as Day-age, Gap,
framework, etc. they aren't exception without any certain issues but they are
quite valid and possible understanding which we can embrace. We are ought to go
with non-concordist understanding rather than concordist. Concordist
understanding needs careful scientific consideration to check agreement with
Genesis rather than forceful connection.
Hence, let us read Genesis in its original context and let
scientific discoveries reveal more about the universe. A true investigation may
contradict only framework (as it was more phenomenological and related with
ancient myths) but not the theme of Genesis.
