The Bible’s Purpose: Revealing God’s Will, Not Science || 2025

It’s tempting to use the Bible as a tool to argue against theories like evolution, but simply holding it up and declaring “You’re wrong!” misses its true purpose. The Bible isn’t a science textbook, nor was it meant to address modern scientific questions like carbon dating or fossil records. Instead, it reveals who God is and who we are in Him.

Consider the theory of evolution. We don’t know if it’s fully true, partially true, or false—it’s a scientific question still under investigation. But using cherry-picked Bible verses to shout against it often leads to confusion. For example, the Bible reflects the ancient cosmology of its time, not modern science (Firmament, Dome, Pillars). When some claim the Bible contains modern scientific insights, they may later backtrack, saying, “It’s a book of signs, not science,” as Dr. Zakir Naik has said about the Quran. This inconsistency weakens our witness. Why claim the Bible is a science book at all?

The ancients who received scripture weren’t asking our questions. They didn’t search for rock strata or fossils of Tyrex or debate evolution. Their focus was on knowing God and their identity as His people. Through the Bible, God distinguished Himself from the gods of Egypt, showing He is the one true Creator (Exodus 20:2-3). The Bible’s purpose was to shape their understanding of Him and His will, not to provide scientific data.

Today, some Christians feel the Bible needs scientific validation to be trustworthy, as if science holds greater authority. But this approach misunderstands scripture’s role. The Bible reveals the spiritual truths of its time, using the language and understanding of its audience (Psalm 19:1-4, where creation declares God’s glory, not scientific specifics). God’s concern isn’t the means of revelation—whether stone tablets for Moses or a WhatsApp message today—but the message itself: His will and purpose for us.

For example, God gave Moses the Ten Commandments on tablets (Exodus 31:18), but if it was today He might give Moses pdf documents to share His truth. The medium changes; the mission doesn’t. Back then, God told His people to follow Him with camels or on foot; today, He might say, “Take a flight to New York to serve.” The point is obedience to His call, not the method of delivery.

Let’s stop looking to the Bible for scientific proof and instead seek our identity in Christ. Jesus is the focus of scripture, revealing God’s love and purpose for us (John 5:39, “The scriptures testify about me”). By looking to Him, we find who we are and what God desires. Let’s listen for His voice and follow His will, trusting the Bible as our guide to faith, not a weapon for debates.
