1) Jesus became God from a Man:
This sort of idea was found in a viral reel of an Indian actor Nana Patekar. This idea is also used by our Hindu neighborhood to prove their concept that man can become God. This is dangerous doctrine. It was a suggestion from the devil. The fact is plain and straightforward: God became Man. No matter how world takes it, we don't compromise.
Biblical References:
John 1:1, 14: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us…” (This affirms Jesus’ pre-existent divinity and incarnation.)
Philippians 2:6-7: “Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.” (This shows God becoming man, not vice versa.)
Colossians 2:9: “For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form.” (This confirms Jesus’ full divinity in human form.)
2) We can be like Christ, we need Christ consciousness, there is hidden Christ within us:
Yes, it is God's vision or intent to make us in Christ's image. But here's twist- this doctrine doesn't make any difference between Christ and us! It teaches that Christ is a kind of state which might sound similar to Krishna consciousness or Buddhatwa prapti. It just teaches that we already have Christ hidden within us, we just need to recognize it. This is a Hindu teaching not Bible's. Biblically, Christ means Anointed One and Jesus is the Christ. God wants us to be "like Him" not to be Literal Christs. A recently emerging movement is now seen even in Nepal by a name Tav dharma with a similar agenda. Be careful, it is welcoming foreign religious concept to which the Bible doesn't agree.
Biblical References:
Romans 8:29: “For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.” (This shows believers becoming like Christ, not becoming Christs.)
Acts 4:12: “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” (This affirms Jesus’ unique role as the Anointed One.)
John 14:6: “Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” (This counters the idea of an internal “Christ” apart from Jesus.)
3) There is God above Jesus:
There is no such God above Jesus. Jesus is God. The confusion is merely due to misunderstanding Trinity in which people might think Father is God greater than Jesus. However, the doctrine of incarnation is essential to understand this. Jesus willingly chose to operate under submission to his Father. Father became his God because of incarnation. He was lowered down than angels for a while but after resurrection Jesus got back to his glory and status i.e. right hand of God! Jesus shares same divinity with Father. So, it is nothing but a mistaken and oversimplified attempt to think there is God above Jesus. Even in Hebrews 1, we can clearly see Father calls Jesus God! All three persons of Trinity are also equally emphasized! The Bible just plainly teaches there is but One God!
Biblical References:
Hebrews 1:8: “But about the Son he says, ‘Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever…’” (This shows the Father calling Jesus God.)
John 10:30: “I and the Father are one.” (This affirms Jesus’ unity and equality with the Father.)
Philippians 2:9-11: “Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow…” (This confirms Jesus’ restored glory and divine status.)
4) Jesus just appeared to be human:
There are certain groups who teach this. This is a position which holds that Jesus wasn't truly a human like us! This is dangerous because it attacks Jesus' mission on earth that led to salvation! This makes Jesus very mystical. Meanwhile, the Bible clearly teaches Jesus was truly a human! He lived a human life and died a human death! He raised bodily! Hence, it negotiates Jesus' humanity which is very Central to Christian faith!
Biblical References:
1 John 4:2-3: “This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God…” (This affirms Jesus’ true humanity.)
Luke 24:39: “Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.” (This confirms Jesus’ bodily resurrection.)
Hebrews 2:17: “For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest…” (This underscores Jesus’ humanity for salvation.)
5) Jesus attained his powers from meditation and yoga. This enabled him to resist the suffering of crucifixion:
This is a total dishonor to God. This is an agenda to exalt yoga and meditation! This is an attempt to dismiss His death and resurrection! Remember, these claims are from conservative religious groups who cannot withstand Jesus!
Biblical References:
Colossians 1:19-20: “For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things… by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.” (This affirms Jesus’ divine power and redemptive death.)
John 10:18: “No one takes [my life] from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again…” (This shows Jesus’ divine authority, not human techniques.)
Isaiah 53:5: “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities… and by his wounds we are healed.” (This emphasizes the cross’s purpose, not resistance through meditation.)
6) Jesus is Father, Son and Holy Spirit:
It is a huge misunderstanding of Trinity and often believed by Oneness or Jesus only groups. If Jesus is all three persons by himself, this makes his teaching contradict with his own and his life inconsistent since he has clearly shown differences between them. Next, God is relational. Each persons have their own unique roles to accomplish. It also goes against his mission or God's plan of redemption.
Biblical References:
Matthew 28:19: “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” (This shows distinct persons in the Trinity.)
John 14:16-17: “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth…” (This highlights distinct roles of Father, Son, and Spirit.)
John 17:5: “And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.” (This shows Jesus’ distinct relationship with the Father.)
7) Jesus wasn't God on earth:
The straightforward response is that God cannot cease to be God! He can surely limit himself as he had done in several occasions in Old Testament to which we call theophany. So why should we bother in case of incarnation? Just think like a superhero who lives a normal life by limiting a lot of potentials to relate with normal peoples around him. That's what Jesus did! His divinity never ceased but he rather added humanity and humbled himself!
Biblical References:
Philippians 2:6-8: “Who, being in very nature God… made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness… he humbled himself…” (This shows Jesus’ divinity and self-limitation.)
John 1:1, 14: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… The Word became flesh…” (This affirms Jesus’ divinity in human form.)
Hebrews 1:3: “The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being…” (This confirms Jesus’ divine nature.)
8) Jesus pointed to some other God, not himself:
This is again a New Age pure nonsense! Jesus pointed to Father through himself. The book of John would give us good answers! It is through him, we have access to our Father. It is through him, Father worked from creation to redemption. He didn't point to anyone but himself. He is the Truth, the Way and the Life! There is no God above him!
Biblical References:
John 14:6: “Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” (This affirms Jesus as the exclusive path to God.)
John 10:9: “I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved…” (This reinforces Jesus as the only way to salvation.)
Colossians 1:16-17: “For in him all things were created… all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things…” (This shows Jesus’ role in creation and redemption.)
9) All humans are children of God:
Some movies like God tussi great ho and Pk are found promoting this idea. But this is hopelessly false. Nobody is God's children unless they accept Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior. As Christians, we should never fall into this misconception out of an emotional appeal. It is Jesus where everything changes and matters!
Biblical References:
John 1:12: “Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” (This shows that faith in Jesus grants adoption.)
Galatians 3:26: “So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith.” (This links being God’s child to faith in Christ.)
Romans 8:14-15: “For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God… The Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship…” (This ties adoption to the Spirit through faith.)
10) Be good, and Jesus will help you:
Most films might teach this thinking Jesus is like their gods. But the Bible is clear: we cannot be good enough so Jesus had to live our life on earth to impute his righteousness unto us! This is the biblical message! We cannot ever be good enough to earn God's favour. But it is our trust laid upon Jesus that makes us worthy of God's favour and further help or blessings!
Biblical References:
Romans 3:23-24: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” (This shows that no one is good enough, and salvation is by grace.)
2 Corinthians 5:21: “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” (This highlights Jesus’ imputed righteousness.)
Ephesians 2:8-9: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” (This affirms salvation by faith, not works.)
